Working towards a music grade? AS Music School in Woodseats prepares students of all ages for graded exams in piano, guitar, drums, singing and more. We are a recognised exam centre for RGT, LCM and RSL, so our students sit their grades on site, in a room they know, on instruments they have already played.
Exam boards we prepare students for
- RGT (Registry of Guitar Tutors) — graded exams for acoustic, electric, classical and bass guitar.
- LCM (London College of Music) — a wide repertoire with classical and contemporary pathways across many instruments.
- RSL (Rockschool) — contemporary rock and pop grades for guitar, bass, drums, vocals and keys.
- ABRSM and Trinity — we enter students for these boards too when they suit the student better.
Not sure which board is right? Your tutor will recommend the one that best fits your instrument, your style and the way you like to learn.
What exam preparation covers
- Pieces — choosing repertoire you enjoy and polishing it to performance standard.
- Technical work — scales, arpeggios, rudiments or vocal exercises, depending on the instrument.
- Supporting tests — sight-reading, aural, improvisation and musical knowledge, as your board requires.
- Mock exams — a run-through under exam conditions so there are no surprises on the day.
- Music theory — available alongside your practical lessons. See Songwriting, Composition & Music Theory.
Sit your exam on site
Because we are an exam centre, most of our students take their grades here at 2-4 Cobnar Road rather than travelling to an unfamiliar venue. Piano students play the same pianos they have their lessons on, including our three grand pianos, and your tutor is close by on the day. It makes a real difference to nerves.
Need a pianist for your exam? We also offer exam and rehearsal accompaniment.
UCAS points
Higher grades (Grades 6 to 8) carry UCAS points that count towards any university application, not just music courses. It is a useful bonus for teenagers who are already putting in the practice.
Already learning somewhere else?
You do not have to be a long-standing AS Music School student. If you have a grade coming up and want focused help, get in touch and we will match you with a tutor who knows your board and syllabus.
Exams are always optional
Grades suit some students brilliantly and others not at all. Many of our students never take an exam and simply enjoy playing. We will never push you towards one.
