Ciara

INSTRUMENTS

Piano, violin, cello, ukulele, and music theory

ABOUT ME

Hi, I’m Ciara and I teach piano, violin, cello, ukulele, and music theory.
I started learning piano at age 11, followed by double bass a few years later (once I was tall enough!). I’ve followed my passion for music all the way through to an undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield and a PhD in Renaissance Musicology.
After getting my very first job as a student music teacher at 16, I fell in love with teaching and inspiring others to have the same passion for music that I do. I love to use the skills I have gained from my studies to inspire my students, and you will often find me arranging song requests by students to fit their skill level. I particularly like to encourage my students to play music by underrepresented composers, reflecting my own research into female musicians throughout history.
My teaching focus is always on creating a fun and productive learning environment for students to give them the confidence and skills to reach their musical potential, whatever that may be.

– Reading (fiction and non-fiction)
– Learning languages
– Walks in the Peak District

Throughout my life, I have sung in various church and cathedral choirs, and I currently work at the Crooked Spire in Chesterfield as the Outreach and Choir Manager. I have also been the Musical Director for various shows including Chicago, Thoroughly Modern Millie and The Addams Family.

My priority as a teacher is making sure that students feel comfortable to try new things and make mistakes. I’ve taught all levels of ability and I adapt my teaching to suit the needs of every pupil. About Me

I first came to AS as a student when I was nine years old. I remember feeling quite shy and nervous at first, but the friendly atmosphere from both teachers and students quickly turned that into excitement. Over the years I learned from several different teachers and built great relationships with each of them, always feeling listened to and encouraged to explore the styles and genres I enjoyed.

Now teaching here myself, those experiences have shaped how I approach lessons. I believe the best way to get the most out of students is to make learning fun and engaging. I especially enjoy helping students discover new grooves, techniques, and musical ideas that lead to those great “eureka” moments when everything clicks.

My Hobbies

Outside of teaching, I spend a lot of time playing drums, practising new techniques, and listening to different styles of music. I also enjoy playing in band settings and exploring new artists and genres for inspiration.

My Favourite Things

Playing along to great tracks on the drums and discovering new grooves.

Yanay

Piano

ABOUT ME

Hi!!! I’m Yanay, and I teach piano here at AS!! But I also can play acoustic guitar, a bit of recorder, violin and percussion instruments like bongos and congas.

I started learning music at the age of eight in a music conservatory in Cuba. I continued my studies at the Music Instructor School in Havana, finishing with excellent grades in the specialism of Choral Conducting. Throughout my years of musical training, I learned to play piano and guitar as part of the curriculum to support my career. I also performed in many different venues across Cuba, singing in choirs or accompanying singers on guitar or piano.

I began teaching music in a primary school in 2005, after completing the Music Instructor School, while also studying for a Psychology degree. I always wanted to combine music and psychology to help people and children through music therapy, as I believe music can be restorative. However, I loved teaching, and I haven’t stopped since. I have led rhythm bands and choirs with children, alongside teaching guitar and piano.

I mostly teach classical music because I believe it gives students a strong understanding of music theory and supports good technique, allowing them to play anything they want later on. However, I also love Latin Jazz, Boleros, and other Latin genres such as Cha-Cha-Cha, Samba, Bossa Nova, and Salsa.

MY HOBBIES

  • Learning new songs and singing them while accompanying me with the piano or the guitar
