Kids Band Classes

There’s nothing like the buzz of playing in a band. At AS Music School in Woodseats, our Play-In-A-Band classes let kids and teenagers (and adults — see below) get out of one-to-one lessons and into a real band, with other students of a similar age and ability. Songs the band actually wants to play. Real gigs throughout the year. Real musicianship.

If your child is already learning an instrument — at AS Music School, anywhere else, or even teaching themselves — they can join.

Play-In-A-Band classes (ages 8 to 19)

Our Play-In-A-Band classes are 30-minute weekly sessions for players and singers aged 8 to 19. Bands are grouped by age and stage, and we cover the full sweep of styles — rock, pop, blues, indie, jazz, whatever the band wants to take on.

What students get out of it:

  • Real band experience — playing live, with other people, working from an actual song.
  • Skills you simply can’t develop in one-to-one lessons: timing with other players, listening, dynamics, stage presence, communication.
  • Performance opportunities — we run regular gigs and showcases through the year so band members get to play in front of an audience.
  • Friendships with other young musicians from across south Sheffield.
  • A reason to practice — there’s nothing quite like having a band rehearsal coming up to focus the mind.

Open to drummers, guitarists, bass players, keyboard/piano players, vocalists and more. Lessons are led by experienced, DBS-checked tutors who play in working bands themselves.

Rock band lessons in Sheffield — what makes ours different

  • You don’t have to be an AS Music School one-to-one student to join. If your child has been learning elsewhere, or even teaching themselves, they’re welcome.
  • Real performances, not just rehearsals — gigs, recitals and social events throughout the year.
  • A proper school behind it — qualified, DBS-checked tutors, three grand pianos on site, full PA and amps in the studios, and 207+ five-star Google reviews.
  • Right in Woodseats — 2-4 Cobnar Road, S8 8QB. Parking on site, easy access from across south Sheffield.

Adult Bands and Rock & Blues Group

For older students, we run two adult bands plus a dedicated Rock & Blues Group. These are sociable, supportive groups for adults who want to play with other people — whether you’re a returning musician dusting off the gear after years away, or a working musician who just wants to play more. We also run a Ukulele Group for adults.

Frequently asked questions about our bands

Does my child need to already play an instrument?

Yes — Play-In-A-Band classes work best when each student already has the basics on their instrument or voice. If you’re starting from scratch, our [one-to-one lessons] are the best place to begin. Most students start one-to-one lessons and join a band a few months later.

What instruments are in the band?

Bands typically include drums, electric guitar, bass, keyboard or piano, and vocals. We can also incorporate other instruments depending on the band and the songs being worked on.

Can my child join if they take lessons somewhere else?

Absolutely. Band classes are open to all instrumental and vocal students, even if you’ve had lessons elsewhere.

How are the bands grouped?

By age and stage — so a band of 9-year-olds isn’t trying to play with a band of 17-year-olds. We’ll talk you through which group would suit best when you get in touch.

Where do you perform?

We host gigs and showcases throughout the year, both at our own venue and at events around Sheffield. Past performances have included Woodseats Snowflake Light Switch-On and other community events.

Band classes are open to all our instrumental and vocal students. Even if you’ve had lessons elsewhere you can still join these classes.

Your playing ability and age will be taken into consideration to help us put together groups of musicians who are well-suited to each other. The group classes are run by our expert tutors who will tailor the sessions to their participants’ preferences.

We offer complimentary first lessons, so you can try it out FREE of charge. Contact us for more info on Play in a Band.
