Frequently Asked Questions
At AS Music School we cater for all ages and levels. Anyone who is interested in making music will benefit from being part of our school. In addition to 1-2-1 lessons we run a variety of group classes and hold events throughout the year which we’d love you to take part in.
Getting started
If I’m not sure about joining after the Free Lesson today, can I go away and think about it?
We appreciate that some people need a little longer to make up their minds. However, our lesson spaces are in great demand. We will hold the lesson slot open for you for 24 hours so it’s fine to contact us tomorrow to let us know whether you’d like to go ahead or not.
What age can my child start music lessons at AS Music School?
It depends on the format. Our Early Learning group classes are for children aged 3 to 6 — a friendly, gentle introduction to music. From age 6 to 8, we offer 15-minute one-to-one mini-lessons designed for younger players. From age 8 onwards, students take a full 30-minute one-to-one lesson each week. There’s no upper age limit — we have many adult students at AS Music School, including complete beginners.
Where is AS Music School located?
We’re at 2-4 Cobnar Road, Woodseats, Sheffield, S8 8QB — five minutes from Chesterfield Road and easy to reach from across south Sheffield, including Meersbrook, Heeley, Nether Edge, Beauchief, Greenhill, Norton, Bradway, Dore and Totley. There’s free parking on site.
What instruments do you teach?
We teach piano, keyboard, guitar (acoustic, electric, classical, rock and bass), drums, singing/vocals, ukulele, violin, songwriting, composition and music theory. We also run Early Learning music classes (ages 3 to 6), Play-In-A-Band classes (ages 8 to 19), and adult group classes including a Ukulele Group and Rock & Blues Group.
Lessons and discounts
Do you offer any discounts?
We offer all our students great value for money! Families with more than one student enrolled can benefit from our family discount when paying by direct debit. The lower priced Stave House and Band Classes are excluded from this. Please get in touch for more information.
What if I can’t get to a lesson?
You can cancel and rearrange your lessons through our diary system, alternatively please email us at info@asmusicschool.com to advise of your absence. We will re arrange lessons where possible when we receive 24+ hours notice. Please see our Terms & Conditions for full details.
What if I want to stop coming for lessons?
Please talk to us about any concerns you have as soon as possible. We are always happy to explore other options for our students as we want to give you the best possible service. Please see our T&C sheet for full details, but all we require is one month’s notice if you really do want to leave us.
Tutors and teaching
Are your teachers qualified?
All our tutors are experienced, enthusiastic and DBS checked. They hold qualifications and/or degrees appropriate to their work and bring a wide range of skills to AS Music School.
Should I sit in the lessons with my child?
Children behave quite differently when their parents are present in lessons. We find it’s best to give your child their own space with their tutor. They will let you know any important points at the end of the session. We will work with you to achieve the best arrangement for you and your child as we realise what’s right for some is not a blueprint for all.
Music exams
Do you enter students for music exams?
Yes, we enter students for nationally recognised music exams with various exam boards when they have made suitable progress. Higher grades accrue UCAS points which can be used to help gain admission to university – for any subject, not just music. Introductory grades provide a friendly introduction for less experienced students.
We are a large music school which enables us to book examiners to visit us each year, giving our students the advantage of taking exams in a familiar setting. We are proud to say that our students regularly achieve some of the highest exam marks in the region.
Do we have to take exams?
Exams can be very helpful in motivating students but they are not compulsory. There’s certainly more to music-making than achieving grades and many of our students do not take exams at all.
Which exam boards do you work with?
We are a recognised exam centre for RGT, LCM and RSL (Rockschool). We also enter students for ABRSM and Trinity College London exams. Being a centre for three boards is unusual in Sheffield — it means our guitar and contemporary students can sit their grades on site in a familiar setting rather than travelling.
Bands, groups and what’s on
Do you offer band classes for kids and teenagers?
Yes — our Play-In-A-Band classes are 30-minute weekly sessions for players and singers aged 8 to 19. Students play in a band with other AS Music School students, working on songs they love and performing at our regular gigs. It’s the fastest way to develop musically and one of the most popular things we do. We also run Adult Bands and a Rock & Blues Group for older students.
How do I find out what’s on?
